The Simcoe County District School Board manages a significant annual budget approaching 800 million dollars. The Trustees elected in this upcoming vote are no longer directly responsible for overseeing these funds and providing the necessary governance. Currently, the S.C.D.S.B financial statement remains healthy, maintaining a balanced operating position, using approximately 4 million dollars from surplus. The accumulated unappropriated surplus stands at 18 million dollars. Achieving this is a complex challenge, as it requires heat breaking decisions to deny various funding requests to ensure the books stay balanced.

Recent news has highlighted instances where the Ontario government intervened in other school boards, dissolving their board of elected trustees. Frequently, these boards were mired in chronic deficits and spending beyond their means. When a board is replaced by a single supervisor, the democratic connection between the community and the education system is severed. Local accountability disappears, leaving voters without a representative to address their concerns. This is why financial responsibility—though it may seem mundane—is the foundation of our local democracy, ensuring your tax dollars are managed transparently by your community’s voice.

We have also seen reports of unacceptable conduct by trustees in other districts. In one shocking example, a school board funded an overseas trip to Italy for four trustees under the guise of purchasing art. They traveled with premium upgrades and stayed in luxury accommodations, all financed by the taxpayer. Most concerning was that the board reportedly amended its own bylaws specifically to facilitate this expenditure. This sparked justified public outrage and prompted the Education Minister to take decisive if not heavy handed action, placing all Ontario boards on high alert.

We must protect the integrity of local decision-making. As your trustee, I will be vigilant in advocating for bylaws that strictly monitor trustee spending. I bring more than just intention to this role; in my previous career from 2001 to 2012, I held multiple licenses and half a dozen professional accreditations, at one point I specialized in analyzing corporate financials as a Small Business Lender. This financial literacy that I possess will allow me to translate complex budgets into clear information for you, the voter so you can engage in this process with me. By shining a light on board finances, I aim to empower our community to demand transparency and ask the critical questions necessary to keep our local schools viable.
